Keeping a Municipal Fleet Clean and Green
Brookhaven Highway
Department
The Brookhaven Highway Department is one of the largest in New York State and is responsible for more than 3,500 lane miles of roadway. The Highway Department maintains a large fleet of trucks, plows excavators, salt trucks and other heavy equipment.
Municipalities need to keep their fleet vehicles in top working order. That includes cleaning contaminants like salt and mud that build- up on vehicles in the daily work of maintaining the Town’s roadways.
The decision was made to install an automatic large vehicle wash system that could clean a wide variety of vehicle shapes and sizes. In addition, the Town identified a need to protect local water resources from excess water and wastewater that was not allowed in the local sanitary sewer system.
The solution was to find an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective way to clean the equipment, control water runoff, and safely dispose of the wastewater generated by washing road vehicles.
Working closely with the engineers at Westmatic, the solution was to install a Touchless Rollover/Gantry large vehicle wash system in a new, customized wash bay. A highlight of this system is the installation of a closed-loop water recycling system that can reclaim up to 85% of the water. Westmatic designed a system to capture the water prior to entering the town’s sanitary sewer system that will reduce the town’s sewer fees and provide for a safe and cost-effective way of disposing of the wastewater.
The Touchless Rollover system was configured with several options that provide superior cleaning. The system features a pre-soak arch, high-pressure chassis and wheel wash, high-speed rotating nozzles and a rinse arch and an LCD touchscreen wash program selector that enables the system to change to accommodate different vehicle sizes and shapes.
Unique Feature
An RFID system was installed which allows the Town to program the vehicle type, so the driver does not have to manage program selection. It also allows them to track who is using the system providing data on cost control, cost-sharing and budget tracking. Programmed for multi-agency use, Brookhaven has the option for future shared services with other municipalities.
